Heritage
About 1 in 6 people who live in Washington County are of Italian origin. The arrival of Italian immigrants was part of the growth in Washington’s population and the local economy in the early 20th century.
The Italian Heritage Collection at Citizens Library holds articles, books and other publications. A partial list of online information about Italian heritage in the area can be seen at Publications and Other Media at the Primo Italiano Lodge #2800 website.
This year’s festival honors leaders of Washington’s first Italian festivals, which were held in the 1980s. Honorees include Richard Celani, Nancy Arena Razvoza, Eugene Trapuzzano and others. The current series of Italian festivals, now in its 8th years “wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of the men and women of Washington who held the first festival some 50 years ago,” said Carla Miller, Festival Chair.
